SAN JOSE – Firefighters on Tuesday evening battled a brush fire on the border of San Jose and Milpitas, authorities said.
The fire was reported just after 4 p.m. on the 500 block of Mill River Lane, the San Jose Fire Department said.
There were no reports of any injuries.
No evacuation orders were issued, but residents were being advised instead to shelter in place.
Fire department spokeswoman Erica Ray said Tuesday evening that there were no structures threatened. Additional information about the fire, including an estimate of its size and a potential cause, was not available.
As of 9 p.m., San Jose and Milpitas firefighters were still working to extinguish the fire, which was contained to a riparian area — the area between land and a nearby stream, the San Jose Fire Department said in a tweet.
Smoke from the fire was visible for miles and obscured views of the foothills from Interstate 680.
Barbara Russell, 56, who is homeless, was staying in the area where the fire appeared to have started.
“It was crazy,” said Russell, who returned from an outing to the grocery store to find flames spreading through the dry grass.
Russell was taking care of two cats for a friend and didn’t know where they went during the fire. She also wasn’t able to grab her belongings, including clothes, shoes and a generator.
“It was so fast,” she said.
